Dreaming of a coral wall
‘At the very tip of Ras Mohammed national park is the world class dive site Shark Reef. This Red Sea 700 meter vertical wall is exposed to extremely strong currents which ensures the growth of soft corals and attracts a huge amount of fish.
Kim – ‘Over 25 years ago and with only a few dives under my belt, I felt daunted at the prospect of diving this site with its unpredictable currents. But my first dive on Shark reef will stay with me forever.
At that time there was a rope lying on the shallow sand inshore of the two pinnacles. We were instructed to haul ourselves along the rope against the very strong current to the edge of the drop-off. Once at the ‘cliff edge’ we looked down over the plummeting wall with a sense of vertigo. We finned out into the blue and we were flying through huge schools of barracuda and I could see the sharks cruising beneath us. When we reached saddle between the reefs (which was pretty quickly), we encountered a ferocious down current. Then just as suddenly, the currents completely switched. And we were off again, flying around Yolanda and finally landing in the calm beautiful coral garden under the boat. What a dive….’
