Deep Impressions Underwater Art
‘The Wall’ was inspired by the world class dive site Shark Reef in the Red Sea. This 700 meter vertical wall is found at the very tip of Ras Mohammed national park, where strong currents ensure prolific sea life and soft corals.
Kim – ‘Over 25 years ago and with only a few dives under my belt, I felt daunted at the prospect of diving this site with its unpredictable currents. But my first dive on Shark reef will stay with me forever.
At that time there was a rope lying on the shallow sand inshore of the two pinnacles. We were instructed to haul ourselves along the rope against the very strong current to the edge of the drop-off. Once at the ‘cliff edge’ we looked down over the plummeting wall with a sense of vertigo. We finned out into the blue and flew through huge schools of barracuda with sharks cruising below us. On reaching the saddle between the reefs, we encountered a ferocious down current and just as suddenly, the currents switched completely. And we were off, flying around Yolanda and finally landing in the calm beautiful coral garden under the boat.
