In 1945, the US Liberty ship James Eagan Layne was torpedoed off Plymouth and despite the huge hole in her side the ship remained afloat and she was beached in Whitsand Bay shortly after, with no lives lost. The wreck now sits on the sand at 23 meters and although she’s starting to break up, she’s still one of the best loved dives here in Plymouth.
